 Members’ Announcements

  • Piet Nieuwland has had three poems published in Brief 54, a book of poetry and short stories. This book is released nationally, and is available to subscribers. The editor is Olivia Macassey at brief.the.journal[at]gmail[dot]com
  • Piet has also had a poem published in the latest Landfall, and he is reviewing poetry and books in Landfall Online.

Peter Dane

NZSA Northland Branch member, Peter Dane, passed away 29 July 2016, aged 94. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, 11 September, 1.30pm–3.30pm at the Beth Shalom Progressive Synagogue, 180 Manukau Road, Epsom, Auckland. This will be followed by refreshments and brief individual reflections. Please RSVP to Jenny Rawlings email:[at] if you wish to attend.

Why are you a member?

We would appreciate members writing a short paragraph outlining the advantages they enjoy as members to help promote NZSA among Northland writers. Please send your piece to the NZSA Northland email address: northlandauthors[at]gmail[dot]com. The information will be collated and used in press releases and leaflets.

Members’ Books

We would like to encourage members to discuss their books on this site. You can have one book (or one series of books) featured in PenNorth (until all members have had an opportunity and then you are welcome to feature another one) which will also be displayed on our Books page here. Descriptions should be kept to around 200 words. If you are interested, please send an image of the cover and your description to Kathy or to northlandauthors[at]gmail[dot]com. Remember this is your forum. If you would like your book featured then please let us know.

Next Meeting – October

There will be no Northland Branch meeting in September. Our next meeting will take place on Sunday 30 October at 11am at Kings Theatre Creative, Kawakawa. This will be followed at 1.30pm by our New Zealand Book Week event, featuring Aroha Harris.  Dates for 2016 meetings can be found here.

  • Dirty Word Open mic Wednesday 7pm, 15 September at the Old Stone Butter Factory, Whangarei.
  • Poets at Bohemian (ex Piano Bar) Rust Ave, Whangarei (near rail over bridge) 5pm, Thursday 22 September.

New Zealand Book Week

  • Aroha Harris, co-author of Tangata Whenua, winner of this year’s illustrated non-fiction section of the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards, is the keynote speaker at our New Zealand Book Week event to be held at Kings Theatre Creative in Kawakawa on Sunday 30 October at 1.30pm.
    After Aroha’s talk local members will present work they have published in the past year. Please mark this date in your diary and support this event and your fellow writers. We have been fortunate enough to receive funding from the ASB Community Trust for this initiative. Let’s prove that that we have the interest, community support and fellowship to make such sponsorship worthwhile.
    Northland members are invited sell their books at this event. Contact northlandauthors[at]gmail[dot]com to arrange to be included.
  • NZSA is asking members who would like their books to be considered for promotion as part of New Zealand Book Week 2016 to complete this form

Northland Writing Groups

The National Office of NZSA is updating information about writers’ groups around the country. If you are a member of a writing group that would like to be listed on the NZSA website, please email us on northlandauthors[at]gmail[dot]com with the name of the group, contact details, venues and meeting times.

NZSA National Writers Forum to explore the art, issues and business of writing

Patricia Grace, Nalini Singh, Ockham award-winner Stephen Daisley and Canadian writer Kate Pullinger are just some of the writers so far announced as participants in the inaugural National Writers Forum taking place on 17–18 September. They will be joined by publishers, agents, editors, festival directors and a range of other industry professionals from New Zealand and overseas.

‘The National Writers Forum is about sharing opportunities and knowledge,’ says Jackie Dennis, Chief Executive Officer of NZSA. ‘We’re bringing together a community of writers and publishers from around the world and addressing issues of concern, from copyright reversion to freedom of expression.’
