WHAT IS SCBWI?

Firstly, it’s the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, so it’s aimed right at those who create children’s books. It’s an organisation based in the USA, but has “chapters” all over the world, each with their own regional advisers who run events and meetings. Over the last 20+ years, the Australian chapter has grown and now has branches in most states.

This year, New Zealand broke away from Australia East and became its own region or chapter. So we now have a committee and two advisors, one for each main Island. You would think Australia would have more distance issues than us! But children’s creators in NZ live far and wide.

It’s not cheap to join, mainly because of the exchange rate (you have to pay in US dollars), but that doesn’t mean you can’t take part in the NZ offerings. Most of the seminars are online, and non-members just pay a bit more. In Whangarei, I’ve started organising coffee get-togethers every now and then, and anyone can come along who is a children’s book creator. The more the merrier! Just email me at clark.sherryl@gmail.com to go on my contact list.

There is more information about SCBWI at www.scbwi.org and their YouTube channel is at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCErOT_O_OHO7UryrKfAwTUg

PAV DECONSTRUCTED

Edited by Jac Jenkins and Kathy Derrick

“A volume filled with sticky ingredients, held together by Kiwi humour. Here readers will find poems, art, stories and songs – and a recipe for a humdinger of a gin fizz with a pav twist. It opens with an introduction by Andrew Paul Wood (New Zealand) and Annabelle Utrecht (Australia) and is sprinkled with newspaper clippings, quips and cartoons, and even a suggestion for a new postage stamp series. But beware: the endings are not always sweet. For some, frothy egg whites lead to darker stories from family histories. Pain and loss may lurk under the fluff and sometimes our obsessions run deep. This eclectic and colourful collection invites readers into the many layers of pavlova.”

Michelle Elvy, author of the everrumble and the other side of better

Help Pavlova Press get their luscious, hard-cover book, Pav Deconstructed, under NZ Christmas trees this year! They have set up a PledgeMe campaign to cover a portion of Pav Deconstructed’s high production costs. This is the early-bird way to pre-order your copy so pop over to the campaign page and choose your reward – if you can’t manage a copy of Pav Deconstructed, there are smaller rewards to choose from too. The campaign is already up and running and off to a good start. Remember that you will only pay (and receive your reward) if the campaign has reached its goal in 2 months’ time.

“Half my life is an act of revision.”

-John Irving

Published by Patricia Fenton

“The way we were” I began my teaching career in New Zealand and later worked in international schools around the globe before being appointed to the International Baccalaureate with responsibility for authoring curriculum and professional development publications. In recent times, I’ve combined my passion for writing and education to produce my first novel, Beyond the Rimu Grove. My aim was to capture and communicate “The way we were.” I’m now working on my second novel entitled War Bride. It’s a fictionalized account of the life of my late mother-in-law, Pru Fenton who met and married her Kiwi soldier in Cirencester, England in 1942.
