Invitation – Whangarei women in the Arts

Please let us photograph you for our community arts programme

We have set up a studio on Bank St in the Northland Youth Theatre rooms (top floor of the Butter Factory building. Look for the Northland Youth Theatre sign at the entrance.)

A research project for the creative arts revealed that Adele Younghusband had a professional photography studio in the 1920s, in this very building. A hundred years later, Bank Street looks very different but Whangarei women actively involved in the arts live on!

We invite you to contribute to a collection of photographs depicting who we are, how many we are and what areas of the arts we represent. Our studio will be open on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, until Friday 19th December. Please call in – no appointment necessary!

Creative Rights = Creative Reads

Opinions around creative rights will be at the forefront this coming year. A new paper on the Objectives of the Review of the Copyright Act and the results of the MBIE Sapere Research are imminent. The options paper is due in the second half of 2021.

NZSA Mentor programme

The NZSA Mentor Programme accepts applications for the 2021 programme from 1 Dec 2020 to 1 Feb 2021.

It is designed to give beginning or emerging writers who demonstrate potential and commitment the opportunity to work closely with an experienced writer as their mentor in order to hone their writing skills and, in the process, take a piece of work from the early stages to a polished manuscript with potential for publication. More

’tis the season…

Kiwi Christmas Books – charity book drive for Whangārei kids

A reminder to drop your donations into the box at Storytime (Reyburn House Lane, Town Basin, Whangārei) by the end of Wednesday 9 December. If you’d like to donate a book but are too busy or can’t make it into town, please email ms.maryderuyter[at]gmail.com and we can sort something out.

All books will be delivered to the Whangārei Women’s Refuge, who will distribute them as Christmas presents among the young people whose families are using their services this festive season.

And don’t forget Lesley’s Te Puna Women’s Refuge Critiquing Raffle

To enter, simply send a cheque (made out to Te Puna) to Lesley Marshall (Editline, 20 Beverley Cres, RD 9 Whangarei 0179), and she will put you in the draw. Alternatively, you can direct debit money into Te Puna’s account (Acc: 123101 0056429 00; name: Te Puna o Te Aroha Women’s Refuge) and let Lesley know what you’ve paid them so she knows how many chances to give you. If an overseas writer wants to enter they can donate to their local refuge equivalent. You can contact Lesley at editline[at]xtra.co.nz.

Thank you to all those who have already entered—and your chances are good because numbers are a bit down this year, which isn’t surprising.  All the same, between that and the Christmas books, the kids at Women’s Refuge will have a slightly merrier Christmas.
