OPPORTUNITIES:

Whangārei Library Flash Fiction Group

If you are interested in writing, sharing and generally having fun with flash and micro fiction, this is the place to be.

Except for January, we meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 11am, in the May Bain Room at the Whangārei Central Library. Our February meeting this year will be on Tuesday 13th as the first Tuesday is Waitangi Day. We have a prompt each month and discuss each other’s work after reading our stories. We are starting this year with a workshop about how to critique positively, run by Sherryl Clark.

WRITING FAIRY TALES

Saturday 24th February 2024, 10am-12noon

May Bain Room, Whangarei Library, Rust Avenue

Part 1: a talk on how to write new, original fairytales, rather than rewriting or ‘fracturing’ old, familiar ones. I will describe my PhD research on why fairytales have endured for hundreds of years, why they resonate with us so strongly, their use in child therapy, and show modern examples. Then I’ll explain the creative process I developed which was based on the concept of ‘free writing’ with particular prompts.

Part 2: a writing workshop that will begin with a reading, and then I provide a range of images as prompts for participants to write their own tales.

The session is open to everyone, at no cost, but the library has a limit of 40 because of room size. So you must book via the email address. Bring a notebook and pen for writing.

Please book by emailing – sherrylclarkbackup@gmail.com

“The way we were” I began my teaching career in New Zealand and later worked in international schools around the globe before being appointed to the International Baccalaureate with responsibility for authoring curriculum and professional development publications. In recent times, I’ve combined my passion for writing and education to produce my first novel, Beyond the Rimu Grove. My aim was to capture and communicate “The way we were.” I’m now working on my second novel entitled War Bride. It’s a fictionalized account of the life of my late mother-in-law, Pru Fenton who met and married her Kiwi soldier in Cirencester, England in 1942.
